About Akani - Volunteers

The importance of volunteers can not be over emphasised. In the first few years of our existence, a number of volunteers worked tirelessly from an old farmhouse on the property. They gave of their love, time and total commitment to these disadvantaged children. A number of these volunteers from 9 years ago are still involved with Akani today. The children need to flourish and grow in an environment in which they can play and learn, explore and laugh, build friendships and be loved and cared for.

Akani now has a number of permanent staff, drawn and trained from the Diepsloot community. On Saturday mornings they are assisted by groups of volunteers who give of their time once a month. The children are taught crafts, subjects supporting their school curriculum or alternatively assisted with sport. In addition, on Friday mornings a group of dedicated volunteers make sandwiches to be given to the children on Saturday mornings.

Volunteers also play a very significant role in helping with sport, teaching chess, assisting in the library, dance and drama classes, arranging functions, repairing old toys.
